The Lager this sat....
03:21pm 01/11/2005
Sat. Nov. 5th: Hurricane Katrina Benefit

The Dollfaces: So good we had to bring ‘em right back! Though these kids may be getting a little long in the tooth (I think some members may have hit college finally!) they still have a hot garage/pop sound and a maturity in their music that defies their age. Come out to support them AND a great cause

http://www.thedollfaces.com/

http://www.myspace.com/thedollfaces

The Bomb Pops: Long overdue return to the Lager House of these veteran Detroit rockers. With a sound that works in 70’s punk and glam and combines it with great female vox and a slick, more modern rock sheen, they continue to delight crowds new and old.

http://www.bombpops.com/

http://www.myspace.com/bombpops

Unfinished Thought: Whoa! Where did this band come from? Total slinky, stylish electronic, goth/industrial magic... very cool and unique in the scene ‘round here. Sometimes they go modern with big distorto guitars but the band is at it’s best when the sound is spare, tense and recalling such greats and Depeche Mode and Human League. Very interesting change of pace however you slice it

http://www.myspace.com/unfinishedthought

The Decks: Totally great and currently underrated Detroit up and comers. Clearly sucking in influences both classic and modern and spitting out a sound that’s warmly and awkwardly familiar but at the same time striving and succeeding to be unique. Spare, catchy and cool. They’re also completely adorable!

RIP Eric Hoskins **** Repost from my friend Meghann
05:04pm 22/08/2005
  RIP Eric Hoskins

Eric Hoskins passed away Friday night. Many detroiters knew Eric from playing with fiesty cadavers and shock therapy. Eric was an amazing boyfriend and friend after our relationship ended. He will be missed by many people.

Please join his family and friends at Harris Funeral Home in Garden City. The viewing will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd from 4:00-9:00 pm and the service will take place on Wednesday, August 24th at 11:00 am.

The funeral home is located on Ford Rd. 1 block west of Merrimann. The phone number is 734.425.9200

If anyone has any memorabilia to bring, it would be much appreciated. I have also had trouble contacting everyone, so please help spread the word. Eric's family is especially looking for Collette, Ann, and a lawyer named Steve that Eric had a last will with. If anyone knows how to reach these people, please let me know.

This feels weird writing this and I can't get the fiesty's song "shark" out of my head.

-Meghann Mouyianis

This is really really sad...Eric was a friend of mine even though I haven't seen him probably over a year or so...Great guy ... Super Bass player......RIP brotha

Punk Rock Humour
12:11pm 04/08/2005
dy: Punk Rock Humor (these are worth reading, i promise)

Q: What's orange, red, and yellow and looks good on a hippie?
A: Fire

Q: If a Punk and a Skin are in the back of a car, who's in front? A: A cop.

Q: How many Punks does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: 3. 1 to screw it in and 2 to argue about who did it first.

Q: How many punks does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: Five. One to do it and four to write a zine about it.

Q: How many Straight Edges does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: None, they don't screw

Q: How many Punks does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: 20. 1 to screw it in and 19 to call him a sellout.

Q: How many Emo kids does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: None, they're all to depressed to do it.

Q: How many punks does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: 2 - 1 to screw it in and the other to kick the chair out from under him.

Q: How many punks does it take to change a lightbulb? A: 10. 1 to change the bulb and 9 on the guest list.

Q: How many Emo kids does it take to change a lightbulb? A: 5. 1 to change it and 4 to pass out lyrics.

Q: How many Riot Grrrls does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: None. They just have the men do it for them.

Q: What's the difference between a hippie and a trampoline? A: You take off your boots before you jump on a trampoline.

Two straight edge guys were out walking home from work one afternoon."S--t," said the first guy, "as soon as I get home, I'm gonna rip the wife's underwear off!" "What's the rush?" his mate asked. "The f--king elastic in the legs is killing me," he replied.

A punk, A skin, and a mod walk into a bar. The bartender hands them each a beer with a fly in it. The mod turns the beer away. The punk just drinks the beer in spite of the fly, and the skin grabs the fly by the wings and yells " spit it out! spit it out you bastard!"

New Review of our old cd....

Music Review: The Bomb Pops ''Things They Say''
Posted on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 @ 22:23:09 GMT-7 by chief editor

From the "better-late-than-never" section, Mitch Phillips dusts off the old CD pile and comes out with The Bomb Pops 2002 release, "Things They Say" which features six tracks of pogo punching pop that'll make you wanna tear your t-shirt, dye your hair green and stick a safety-pin through your nose. Clocking in at a total of 13.6 minutes, this CD, unlike Mitch, wastes no time in getting to the point. Click "read more" below for the review.

Band: The Bomb Pops
Release: Things They Say
Year: 2002
Members: Tim Hervey (guitar) , Shawn Hervey (bass), Natalie Wegner (Vocals), Phil Bansen (drums)

When I first saw The Bomb Pops a several years ago at Club Bart, I remember saying that they were all substance and no style (Can you believe the arrogance? I blame the Vicodin). Anyway, here was a great power-pop band, but without a feature to set them apart from the dozens of great bands in the same genre in Detroit.

I like to imagine they took my advice with 2001's addition of vocalist Natalie Wegner, who's smooth and sexy voice is reminiscent of Gwen Stefani or perhaps Martha Davis (No Doubt and The Motels respectively). Whatever their motivation for the line-up change, Wegner's presence gives basement-brothers Tim and Shawn Hervey a splash of style to go with their long-suffered, down-stroking verve. Like some of their infamous 30-second punk songs, The Bomb Pops "Things They Say" is also short and sweet (13.6 minutes total) and comes in a tidy, six track package that inspires an impromptu pogo on just about every track.

At first I was a bit put-off by some of the drumming on this disc (e.g. the intro on "Day Dreamer"), but after listening with fresh ears, I have to conclude everything is as it should be and any timing aberrations are either ignorable, intended or well-earned. For what it's worth, The Bomb Pops have since replaced drummer Phil Bansen with Dark Carnival's Chris Connolly, so you can expect their live show (if they're still gigging) to be quite impressive.

In any case, there's some really good stuff on this disc, particularly the bounding punk gem, "Keep On" which I'm going to add to my iPod right now. You can check out twp of the tracks at Bombpops.com. Get it while you still can. - Mitch
